Ronnie Brewer-Scores Season High 25 Points

December 2, 2009

Two nights ago in Utah’s blowout win against the Memphis Grizzlies, Jazz forward Ronnie Brewer led the team with a season high 25 points and was only one point away from his career high of 26. This game was also Brewer’s first match-up scoring more than 20 points this season.  Brewer ended the first half with 13 points, added six more in the third quarter, and dropped the remaining six in the fourth.   Ronnie also pitched in with 2 steals helping the Jazz run away with their third consecutive win by double digits.

Brewer gives credit to the team’s passing game as the key to their success. Brewer explains: “We’re rotating. We’re helping each other, and on offense we’re making the extra pass to guys that are open.”  Now that the Jazz are finally getting into a rhythm on their home court, the team has high hopes of keeping that same rhythm on the road as they take on the Timberwolves in Minnesota this Saturday. But first, the (10-7) Jazz look to close out their six-game home-stand with another win Friday night against the (6-9) Indiana Pacers of the Eastern Conference, Central Division.

Video of Max Hall saying the f-word

November 30, 2009

Max Hall has been overly criticized for his comments after BYU’s big rivalry game against the University of Utah on Saturday. He has since apologized for those comments. (Click here for the full apology. [Deseret News]) Hall has taken a lot of heat for his comments, but he’s also getting some heat for getting caught on camera using a big no-no word. BYU is renowned for its Honor Code including rules like: No beards and goatees on campus.  Using clean language is fourth on the university’s Honor Code Statement. [BYU.edu] If there is a list of forbidden words at the university, I would imagine, the f-word is near the top.

I’m actually starting to feel bad for Hall. Poor guy. At most other universities, this wouldn’t be such a big deal.

BYU Pres. Samuelson and Coach Mendenhall Shun Max Hall!

November 29, 2009

You guys know this is what’s going to happen next time President Samuelson and Coach Mendenhall see each other. After reviewing the game film and seeing Max Hall cuss twice (the d-word and the f-word), and watching the post-game interview, President Samuelson and Coach Mendenhall decide Hall has shamed the university.  They decide to shun Max Hall by forever forgetting his name. President  Samuelson puts Bronco to the test the next day:

Pres. Samuelson: “Hey Bronco, who was our quarterback the past 3 years?”

Bronco: “I can’t remember.”

Pres. Samuelson: “Hmmm… Wasn’t it like Max Hail, Matt Hall, or something like that?”

Bronco: (shaking head) “Hmm no! I just can’t put my finger on it.”

Pres. Samuelson: (shrugging) “Oh well, no big deal. Wanna go to lunch.”

Bronco: “Ya, sure…”

Pres. Samuelson: “Hahaha!”

Bronco: “Hahaha!”

All Smiles for the Jazz

November 29, 2009

Lately, it has been all smiles for the Utah Jazz.  After a slow start this season, Utah (9-7) is really starting to gel. They have won 5 of their last 6 games and  are showing signs of becoming a dominant presence in the Western Conference this year. Confidence is peaking and spirits are high! The Jazz are playing extremely well despite missing Kyle Korver, CJ Miles, Ronnie Price, and Matt Harpring to injuries. Boozer, who had another big game with 26 points, 12 rebounds,7 assists, 1 block and 1 steal, warned everyone after the game, “…when we get our full team back, watch out!”

The last two games, the Jazz have shot just over 60% from the floor.  Jazz announcer Ron Boone mentioned, ”It’s all because of great execution, making that extra pass, and finding the open teammates.” It’s exactly what the Jazz are doing out there. They are sharing the ball, finding the open man, and getting good high-percentage shots.

Assists have been key for the Jazz. Tonight’s blowout of the Blazers came with a season high 36 assists. Their previous season high (32) was during the annihilation of the Sixers back on November 13th.  The Jazz dominated in both of these games. In fact, the Jazz have not lost this season when they have dished out 26 assists or more in a game. During their nine wins this season, Utah has averaged just under 28 assists per game. On the contrary, when the Jazz lose, they average just under 22 assists.

After the game, Deron Williams said, “Hopefully, we can just realize that this is what we have to do to win, and keep doing it.”

When the Jazz play like they did last night against Portland, they can certainly contend with the top teams in the league. They will definitely have the chance to prove themselves as 5 of their next 12 games are against some of the NBA’s top teams: the Lakers, the Magic, and the Hawks.

How will the Jazz fair during the next 12 games? What is your prediction?

Next game: Monday, Nov. 30 vs. Memphis @ 7:00 PM MT. TV: FSN or NBA League Pass.  Radio: 1320 AM KFAN or 98.7 FM.

Allen Iverson Coming to Utah?

November 28, 2009

For those of you that were hoping the Jazz would sign Allen Iverson for whatever reason; it’s not looking good.  Stephen A. Smith with Fox Sports announced that Philadelphia could possibly be bringing Iverson back to the city where it all began for him.

The 10-time NBA all-star would undeniably bring some much needed excitement and heart to a struggling Sixers franchise. It seems, despite the conflicts between Iverson and the Sixers organization in the past, AI could be “the Answer” the Sixers are looking for.  Iverson’s return would, at least, boost ticket sales.  Philadelphia ranks 29 out of 30 in attendance this year.

Smith quotes a team source as saying, “We’re very, very boring right now. We have absolutely nothing to lose by bringing Iverson back. Nothing at all.”

Views on Booz

November 27, 2009

During the NBA off-season, Carlos Boozer was viewed with a lot of criticism due to his comment on opting out of his contract with the Jazz. Many Utah fans were rubbed the wrong way by his apparent disloyalty.  Yet, the final decision was made and Boozer remains in the starting lineup with the Jazz for the final year of his contract.  At the beginning of the season Boozer seemed a little shaky and most fans still weren’t convinced Carlos would be an asset to the team. Yet, as the season progresses, Boozer’s numbers continue to go up and so does his popularity and favor with Jazz fans.

Lately, Booz has been nothing but money.  Last night against the Bulls, Boozer landed himself a season high 28 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 5 assists helping the Jazz end their three game losing streak against the Bulls.  ”I’m in a great groove, having a good time out there.”  Boozer said.  ”My teammates are trying to find me, and I’m just trying to put the ball in the hole and get us a win.”

All the Jazz players and coaches are pleased with Boozer’s aggressiveness and attitude for the game lately too.  I think most of us would agree that Carlos is definitely back in the groove.  He has been instrumental in helping the Jazz win four of their last five games and will likely be key tomorrow night as the 8-7 Jazz look to walk away with another win over the 12-5 Trail Blazers, who the Jazz have already beaten twice during the pre-season this year.

Game time: 7:00 PM MT.  TV: FSN or NBA League Pass. Radio: 1320 AM KFAN or 98.7 FM
